Do you actually know how old food such as beans is? It turns out that these legumes have been cultivated
long before the Incas! When it comes to beans’ spreading throughout Europe, there’s a belief that until the end of the 16
th century this food was popular
all across the continent.
Let’s learn more about the different types of beans, their usage and the benefits they bring, shall we?
- Giant white beans
Well, they are not always as giant as they name suggests! Also known as
‘Greek gigantes’ (because Greeks are the ones to call it this way), those white beans are definitely among the most famous types. People usually use it for salads, stews, soups or any other kind of meals. By the way, not only is it super tasty, but it turns out it’s also quite healthy. It’s said that white beans contain lots of fibers that the stomach can easily digest. What’s more, the legumes are also very rich in vitamins A, B, C, E, K, PP and others!
- Green beans
This is the perfect thing to choose, if you want to feel site and
‘not full’ at the same time. Half a cup of green beans is thought to have just about 15 calories, 7.5 milligrams of vitamin C as well as 1g of proteins. Basically, green beans are the unripe, young fruit of the bean. So, people actually like to consume it even raw in salads, for example. In case you prefer to cook it, though, you can always steam it and end up with a delicious and a
very healthy dinner.
- Pinto beans
This variety of bean is known to be super high in niacin (Vitamin PP), thiamine (vitamin B1) and folate (vitamin B9). In addition, it may also give you enough plant fibers and proteins, which makes it a great food for those of you who work out regularly. In comparison to green beans, a glass of pinto bean holds about 110 calories. Many people like to prepare
Mexican meals with this type of legumes, but they can also fit perfectly to a soup or a salad.
- Mung bean
“Monday is the day of silence, day of the whole white mung bean, which is sacred to the moon.” Judging by this quote and the interesting name that ‘mung bean’ carries, we would say that this food is
somehow exotic. In general, you can easily recognize the legumes by their small, green, red or yellow beans. As you may guess, they are mostly popular throughout Asia and more specifically in China and India. Mung beans have a very delicate taste with a fine structure, although people usually don’t soak them in advance.
- Garbanzo beans
What an intriguing name as well! Well, garbanzo beans are originally from the Near East. Make sure not to take it for chickpeas as these two are very much alike. A single glass of garbanzo beans is capable of giving you 6g of protein and 7g of dietary fibers. The same amount of the legumes also contains about 120 calories. All this information is enough to understand
how healthy this food is, right? For this very reason you can often use it in salads or soups. Season with some lemon juice, garlic pasta or some humus!
