“Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart.”, says once Erma Bombeck. Speaking of desserts, we can’t help but think of something that can definitely go into the sweet category. It’s kataifi!
Kataifi is a product made of shredded dough that resembles grated wheat. Or some would say it pretty much looks like spaghetti. Whatever your imagination ‘bears’, there’s no doubt that kataifi is among the best oriental foods!
In order to get the perfect kataifi, though, there are a few steps you need to follow. Here they are:
Firstly, it’s very important for you to slice the kataifi into very small pieces. In general, its raw version seems like thin pasta (spaghetti). This is why it needs to be broken into small pieces.
When the product is well chopped, you have to heat it into a deep cooking pot. When its surface starts to get really hot, it’s time for you to put the kataifi inside. What’s more, you will also have to stir all the time so that it doesn’t get stringy.
By the way, while cooking you should be very careful not to burn the product as this can easily happen. After all, you’re working with very high temperatures, right! So, the next step is to add the butter. When the kataifi gets goldenish, you can implement the butter as well.
Adding the grease doesn’t mean you are done, of course! Be sure to keep stirring until the whole butter gets absorbed. You will know it’s ready when the product looks a bit“wet”.
And here comes the last and probably the sweetest step of all! Once you’ve got all this, your homemade Greek kataifi is ready to welcome the syrup, cream, nuts, ice cream or whatever else you’ve got in mind. Many people would prefer to have it only with hot sweet syrup, while others like it with lots of pistachio and walnuts on top. The choice is all yours!
