“I fast for greater physical and mental efficiency.”, Plato once said. Even today more than 90% of Greeks believe that fasting plays a very important role in their life. It represents their faith and will to cleanse their bodies from all the toxins gained throughout the year.
The Nativity Fast is one of those time periods when people abstain mainly from foods that derive from animals as well as from fish. It goes for 40 days starting on November 15 and ending on December 24.
Before we get to the essence, let’s see some more details:
15.11- 22.11 – Strict fast (allows only plant based foods and olive oil)
23.11 – 19.12 – Wine and seafood are allowed (except for Wednesdays and Fridays, which are days for strict fast)
20.12 – 24.12 – Strict fast again
If you’re a new enthusiast who wants to give it a try, now is your time! Here’s 5 things you can afford during this period, which will help you get the most out of your diet:
Proteins – Giving up on meat for 40 days means you have to catch up on proteins. The best alternatives are beans, lentils, rice, wheat, chick-peas, mushrooms and all kinds of whole-wheat products. Don’t forget about nuts and seeds like peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, sesame, sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
Fruits and veggies – The Nativity Fast is a great time for you to start eating more fruits and vegetables. They are full of fibers and antioxidants, which will make you feel as light as a feather. You can choose from apples, oranges, kiwi, broccoli, spinach, potatoes, cabbage, beetroot, carrots, pumpkin, aubergines, peas, corn and lots of others.
Pasta – Yes, that’s right, guys! You may eat almost all kinds of paste products during the fasting period. However, you still need to pay some attention to what’s on the label. Be aware of eggs and other animal products.
Olive oil – As you might know this vegetable oil is said to have plenty of health benefits. That’s why its usage will most likely help you get rid of all the nasty toxins.
Fish – Don’t worry, you won’t have to quit eating fish for the whole period. If you noticed above fish isn’t allowed only during the days of strict fast. Otherwise you can enjoy tuna, sardines, scad, mackerel, herring, trout, you name it!
Finally, we have to stress out that pregnant or nursing women, the elderly, children as well as people with serious illnesses are exempt. If you belong to this category, you should consult a specialist first!
