Meet the Greek Souvlaki!

While most nutritionists argue whether the typical Greek meat bites are part of the Mediterranean diet, culinary experts say this is one of the most popular and delicious food in the world. If you’ve already been to Greece, then you might know this yourself! So, what is Greek souvlaki (Σουβλάκι)? This fast food dish is actually considered one of the Greek cuisine emblems. The word literally means “rotisserie”, which makes it quite obvious that souvlaki consists of meat bites on a spit. You’ll most often see pork, chicken, lamb souvlaki recipes. The meat is marinated in olive oil, oregano, lemon juice, salt and pepper and it is best combined with pita bread and Tzatziki. Delicious!  It’s not surprising that souvlaki was part of the menu back in the times when Athenians have constructed the Parthenon. However, they used to call it ‘Kandavlos’ then. The first Souvlaki House (a.k.a. Gyro House) opened in 1951 in Livadeia, Greece, while today you can have your souvlaki basically anywhere. From all kinds of restaurants and fast food places to your own computer where you can find variety of Greek souvlaki ready cooked for you! Ready for some nutritional facts? Good thing to know is that handmade souvlaki cooked with high quality products is no worse than any ‘superfood’ today. It provides the body with enough carbohydrates, proteins and vitamin B12 (comes from the meat!). What else would you need?! Oh, one last thing – this tasty meal contains no more than 550 calories.
