Surprise your Family with a Traditional Greek Chicken Pie!

Do you remember our blog post about the famous Greek meat pie Kreatopita? It’s made of filo pastry, lamb and lots of spices, of course. Today we’re about to show you another meat pie recipe, which will definitely make you long for more. We’re talking about the traditional Greek chicken pie with onions. It’s called Κοτόπιτα με κρεμμύδια and it combines eggs, chicken and onions (obviously), butter and…don’t think we’re going to reveal the secret ingredient so easy! Let’s get this started, shall we? Products: 700-800g filo pastry 1,2kg chicken meat 5 eggs 200g graviera cheese 70g butter 1 cup of sour cream 5 onions Chopped parsley Salt, black pepper Greek chicken pie Preheat the oven to 190C°. Slice the onions into thin ‘half moons’. Grease the bottom of a baking dish and place them evenly. Then wash the chicken and put it on top of the onions. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper, cover with cooking foil and bake for 1 hour and 15 min. A couple of minutes before the chicken is ready, take the foil away in order for the meat to get brown a little. After that take it and the onions out of this baking dish and let them cool down a bit. Don’t throw away the sauce that’s left because it would be ideal for the pie’s taste. The next step is to bone the chicken and cut it into small pieces. In a big bowl beat up 4 eggs, then add the cream and whip again. After that mix with the other products – the grated graviera, the meat, the onions, the parsley – and season with salt and pepper. Add 2-3 scoops of the sauce to this mixture. Grease another baking dish (you can also use some of the left sauce as well) and place 2 filo pastry sheets on the bottom. Make sure to cover the walls of the baking tin. Then take half of all the pastry sheets and place them one over the other as you oil each of them. Put the whole stuffing in the middle and do the same with the rest of the filo pastry sheets. With the last 2 cover all the sheets that stick from the walls of the baking dish. Cut the pie into squares and grease with the 1 whipped egg. Bake at 190C° for about 40-45 min. In order not to burn the dish, cover it with a cooking foil before its ready. “Hard work always pays off. Get the whole family together and serve this amazing Greek pie for you to enjoy!
